SuperTech Methanol, Ammonium Bicarbonate Plant Marks Milestone on Stream in Nigeria

Nigeria has achieved another landmark in its push for industrial diversification with the commissioning of the SuperTech Methanol and Ammonium Bicarbonate Plant, the first of its kind in the country.

The Chinese-owned SuperTech Chemical Industry Limited, which recently relocated its entire production facility from China to Nigeria, has established operations within the Ondo-Linyi Industrial Hub in Omotosho, Ondo State.

The newly inaugurated plant boasts an annual production capacity of 100,000 metric tons of methanol and 160,000 metric tons of ammonium bicarbonate, positioning it as a major step in the nation’s drive toward gas-based industrialization.

According to the Federal Government, the facility represents a significant leap in efforts to transform Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources into value-added products.

During the plant’s inauguration, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, commended SuperTech for its confidence in Nigeria’s investment climate and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the project. He revealed that plans were already underway to scale up production to 500,000 metric tons of methanol per year by 2026, adding that the government would provide all necessary policy and infrastructural support to facilitate the expansion.

“This project underscores our administration’s vision to make gas the centerpiece of Nigeria’s economic growth,” Ekpo stated. “The Federal Government will work closely with SuperTech to ensure steady gas supply and an enabling environment for large-scale production.”

The establishment of the SuperTech facility is expected to bolster local chemical and fertilizer production, reduce import dependence, and create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs. Industry analysts describe it as a practical example of Nigeria’s effort to convert gas resources into industrial feedstock for domestic manufacturing.

Although the company is Chinese-owned, officials noted that its operations in Nigeria make it the country’s first indigenous methanol and ammonium bicarbonate plant, emphasizing its role in domestic production rather than ownership structure.

As Nigeria continues to expand its gas utilization framework, the SuperTech plant stands as a symbol of growing investor confidence and an important step toward achieving self-sufficiency in chemical manufacturing — a key pillar of the Federal Government’s industrialization agenda.
