Edo Government Empowers Over 54,000 Women Through Economic Initiatives

No fewer than 54,000 women in Edo State have benefited from various empowerment programmes launched by the Edo State Government in collaboration with the Federal Government, according to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah.

Speaking to journalists over the weekend on the ministry’s activities in the past year, Abdallah said the initiatives focused on entrepreneurship training, microfinance access, and skills development, all aimed at enhancing women’s economic independence and productivity.

“The ministry’s skills acquisition programmes have equipped women with vital skills to improve their livelihoods,” she said. “These include training in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle conversion and electric vehicle maintenance, which align with modern technological trends.”

The commissioner highlighted key partnerships with both local and international organisations, including the German International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Society for the Empowerment of Young Persons (SEYP), to strengthen women-focused initiatives. She also noted ongoing collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment (FMITI) to expand socio-economic development programmes for women across the state.

Abdallah further stated that the ministry has intensified advocacy campaigns against human trafficking, working closely with relevant agencies to raise awareness and curb the crime.

“We have prioritised programmes that support the girl child through education and skills development, ensuring they reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the growth of Edo State,” she said. “To achieve this, we have partnered with youth advocates and implemented school-based programmes that promote positive values and responsible behaviour among young people.”

The commissioner added that the ministry continues to provide comprehensive assistance to rape victims, offering medical, psychological, and emotional support while collaborating with law enforcement to ensure justice is served.

“We remain committed to advocating for stricter punishments for convicted rapists,” Abdallah affirmed. “Our goal is to build a safer, more inclusive society where women and girls can thrive without fear or discrimination.”

The commissioner reiterated the government’s commitment to sustaining these empowerment initiatives as part of broader efforts to promote gender equality and socio-economic development in Edo State.
