Kane Rescues Bayern as 16-Game Winning Streak Ends in 2–2 Draw at Union Berlin
Bayern Munich’s perfect start to the 2025/26 season came to an end on Saturday after Harry Kane struck a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a 2–2 draw against a resilient Union Berlin side in the Bundesliga.
The result ends Bayern’s remarkable 16-match winning run across all competitions, though the champions remain firmly atop the league table six points clear of nearest rivals RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, who also stumbled in their respective fixtures.
Union Berlin’s Danilho Doekhi was the unlikely hero for the hosts, scoring twice once in each half to put Bayern under serious pressure at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. His first came from a set-piece in the 18th minute, capitalising on slack defending to head home from close range.
Bayern responded swiftly through a moment of individual brilliance from Luis Díaz, who weaved past two defenders before curling an unstoppable shot into the top corner to level the score at 1–1 before halftime.
Union, however, refused to back down and regained the lead when Doekhi powered in another header from a corner midway through the second half, sending the home fans into raptures.
As time ticked away, Bayern threw everything forward.
Their persistence paid off in the 91st minute, when Kane, ever the poacher, pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire home his 13th Bundesliga goal in just 10 appearances this season.
The equaliser preserved Bayern’s unbeaten run but denied them a 17th consecutive victory which would have extended their own European record for the best start to a season.
Manager Thomas Tuchel praised his team’s fighting spirit despite admitting fatigue was a factor after a gruelling midweek Champions League clash.
“We looked tired and lacked sharpness in key moments,” Tuchel said after the match. “But the character of this team is exceptional they fought until the final whistle.”
Bayern played much of Tuesday’s 2–1 win over Paris Saint-Germain with 10 men, and the effects appeared to linger in Berlin, with several players visibly struggling for rhythm and intensity.
The result keeps Bayern at the summit of the Bundesliga with 28 points from 10 matches, while Union Berlin who have endured a mixed campaign earned a morale-boosting result that could reignite their season.
Bayern will look to bounce back when they host Werder Bremen next weekend, while Union travel to face Augsburg in search of their first home win since September.
