Nigerian Student Jailed in UK for Rape of Teenage Girl in Bradford
A United Kingdom court has sentenced a Nigerian postgraduate student, Chiemka Okoronta, to 10 years in prison for the rape of a 17-year-old girl in Bradford.
The case, which has drawn widespread outrage, was heard at Bradford Crown Court, where Okoronta was found guilty of multiple counts of rape and one count of forcing the victim to engage in sexual activity without consent.
According to reports from West Yorkshire Police, the 29-year-old, who lived on Morley Street in Bradford, committed the offence on March 26, 2025. The court heard that Okoronta deceived the teenage victim by offering her assistance when her phone battery had died and she needed a taxi. He allegedly lured her into his flat under false pretences, locked the bathroom door, and raped her.
After the assault, the distraught victim managed to flee the premises and used a stranger’s phone to call emergency services. She was later able to identify her attacker, leading to his swift arrest and prosecution.
During sentencing, the trial judge condemned Okoronta’s actions, describing them as “predatory and manipulative.”
The court imposed a 10-year custodial sentence with an additional three-year extended licence, meaning Okoronta will remain under supervision after serving his jail term.
Police officials praised the victim’s courage in coming forward immediately after the incident.
“Her bravery in reporting what happened ensured that justice was served,” a spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said. “We hope this conviction offers her some comfort as she continues her recovery.”
The young victim, in a statement read to the court, said the ordeal had shattered her sense of safety and trust. “This experience has turned my life upside down,” she said. “I have flashbacks every day. I stay in my room and avoid talking to people.”
Although the official police report did not confirm his nationality or student status, several British media outlets, including The Sun, described Okoronta as a Nigerian postgraduate student. Some reports also suggest he could face deportation after completing his prison term, though no official statement has confirmed that.
The case underscores the importance of swift reporting and police response in sexual assault cases and highlights the UK’s tough sentencing stance on crimes involving sexual violence and abuse of trust.
