FG Condemns Abduction of Neurosurgeon, Orders Immediate Rescue Operation

Federal Government has strongly condemned the abduction of Dr. Tochukwu Mbanugo, a consultant neurosurgeon with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Anambra State, describing the incident as “distressing and unacceptable.”

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, the ministry expressed deep concern over the doctor’s abduction and called for urgent action to ensure his safe and swift release.

According to the statement, Dr. Mbanugo was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen on Thursday, October 30, 2025, around Omatha Junction in Uruagu, Nnewi, while returning home after completing a long surgical session at the hospital.

Dr. Salako condemned the attack in strong terms, noting that it was both tragic and demoralizing for the nation’s health workforce, particularly as Dr. Mbanugo is one of the few neurosurgeons serving in the region.

“The Federal Government is deeply troubled by this abduction and is in close contact with the Anambra State Government and relevant security agencies to secure the immediate and safe return of Dr. Mbanugo,” Salako said.

He urged the security agencies to intensify their search and rescue operations, stressing that the protection of healthcare workers who dedicate their lives to saving others must be treated as a national priority.

The minister also appealed to the public to provide any useful information that could assist in locating the kidnapped doctor, assuring that the government would not relent until he is rescued unharmed.

While expressing solidarity with the victim’s family, colleagues, and the management of NAUTH, Salako reiterated the ministry’s commitment to working with security authorities to curb rising incidents of attacks on health professionals across the country.

Dr. Mbanugo’s abduction has sparked widespread concern within the medical community, with professional associations calling for better protection and improved working conditions for health personnel nationwide.
