APC Scribe Justifies N29 Million Monthly Electricity Bill for Lagos Deputy Governor, Says no Cheap Power Anywhere

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the sharp increase in electricity bills, following a recent complaint by the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, saying there is no cheap energy anywhere.

Hamzat had revealed that the electricity bill for his official quarters skyrocketed from N2.7 million in March to an astonishing N29 million in April, sparking widespread outrage and concern among residents already grappling with rising energy costs.

Responding to the development, Senator Basiru stated that “there is no cheap energy anywhere in the world,” suggesting that the hike in tariffs may be a reflection of global energy realities and the cost of maintaining a sustainable power supply.

While acknowledging the staggering figure, the APC scribe urged Nigerians to prepare for the economic realities of energy pricing, emphasizing that subsidies and underpricing have long distorted the true cost of electricity in the country.

His comments come amid ongoing debates over the recent tariff hike by power distribution companies (DisCos), especially for Band A customers who are expected to receive a minimum of 20 hours of electricity daily.

The Lagos State Government has yet to issue an official statement addressing the specific bill received by the deputy governor, but the revelation has intensified public scrutiny of billing transparency and accountability within the power sector.

Nigerians across social media have expressed disbelief at the N29 million charge, with many calling for an audit of public sector energy consumption and a reevaluation of the new tariff regime.
