Court Stops Impeachment Plot Against Bayelsa Deputy Governor
A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered a temporary halt to any impeachment proceedings against the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
The trial Judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, issued the order on October 27, requiring the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and its Speaker to appear before the court to justify why they should not be permanently restrained from initiating the action.
The ruling was delivered on an ex-parte motion marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2219/2025, filed by the Deputy Governor.
Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo is seeking an order that would restrain the Bayelsa State House of Assembly from initiating impeachment proceedings against him.
The Deputy Governor claims the motive for the potential impeachment stems from his decision not to defect from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) before the end of his four-year tenure.
Additionally, the Deputy Governor is seeking an order to restrain the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Bayelsa State Attorney General (AG) from withdrawing his security protection as Deputy Governor of the state, pending the hearing of the motion on notice.
The court has adjourned the case till November 13 for the hearing of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction against the defendants.
