Taraba Governor Hints on Joining APC for Enhanced Development
The call for Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, who was elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has intensified, with the Governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters and Special Duties, Josiah Kente, arguing that the move would significantly boost state development.
In a statement issued in Jalingo on Tuesday, Kente described the potential move as a strategic step to ensure “Taraba’s full inclusion in national development and federal opportunities.” He emphasized that the call is not driven by the governor’s personal ambition, but by “the collective interest of Tarabans” seeking stronger federal backing for Kefas’ documented performance in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
“This call is anchored not on partisan interest but on the collective aspiration of the people of Taraba for sustainable progress, infrastructural transformation, and inclusion in national affairs,” Kente stated.
Kente explained that aligning with the APC at the national level would open new channels for development in critical areas.
He argued that Taraba stands to benefit from increased federal presence, including roads, bridges, hospitals, and power installations, which are currently “concentrated in states with stronger federal ties.” He added that cooperation would also be enhanced in areas like security and donor-funded interventions.
The political adviser stressed that Governor Kefas’ “Moving Forward agenda” could achieve greater impact through synergy with the Federal Government. Kente concluded by urging all Taraba stakeholders, youth groups, and opinion leaders to support the “realignment for growth and prosperity,” calling it a “bold, strategic decision that transcends party sentiment in favour of the people’s welfare.”
Should Governor Kefas, who was elected in 2023, eventually defect to the APC, it would represent a major political realignment, effectively ending the PDP’s 26-year rule in the state, which has been a PDP stronghold since 1999.
