NDLEA Officer Injured as Drug Barons Ambush Operatives in Edo
An officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has sustained injuries after suspected drug barons ambushed a joint team of NDLEA and Army personnel during a raid in Ukpuje, a community in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday.
He said the attack occurred as the team advanced into the area, which is known for large-scale cannabis cultivation and trafficking.
According to Ofoyeju, the operatives came under heavy gunfire from suspected local drug cultivators, resulting in an exchange of fire between the security team and the attackers.
“As the officers moved further into the community, they were ambushed by armed cultivators who opened fire on them. One of our officers sustained injuries in the process,” the NDLEA commander said.
The joint team was forced to temporarily retreat to regroup before continuing the operation. Ofoyeju noted that the injured officer is receiving medical attention, while efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the culprits behind the ambush.
He further reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustaining the fight against drug trafficking and illegal cultivation in the state, despite the dangers involved.
“We will not be deterred by attacks or intimidation. The NDLEA remains committed to eradicating drug production and abuse across Edo State,” he added.
Ukpuje and surrounding areas have long been identified as hotspots for cannabis cultivation, with several similar operations in the past leading to violent confrontations between drug traffickers and security personnel.
