Dangote Refinery Expands Capacity To 1.4 Million Barrels Per Day, Targets World’s Largest Status

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced plans to expand its crude oil refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million bpd, a move that would make it the largest single-train refinery in the world once completed.

In a statement on Sunday, the company said the ambitious expansion reflects confidence in Nigeria’s energy potential and aligns with its long-term vision to strengthen Africa’s refining capacity, reduce imports, and boost local production.

According to reports, the expansion will be completed within the next three years and is designed to double output by adding new refining units and optimizing existing infrastructure.

The refinery, which began operations earlier this year, already produces diesel, aviation fuel, and other refined products for domestic and regional markets.

Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, described the move as a “bold step toward making Nigeria self-sufficient in petroleum products and a net exporter of refined fuel.” He added that the project underscores the group’s commitment to industrialization, job creation, and economic transformation.

Industry analysts say the expansion could save Nigeria billions of dollars in annual fuel import costs and enhance energy security across the continent. It also positions the Dangote Refinery as a key player in global energy markets, potentially surpassing existing top facilities in Asia and the Middle East.

The company also disclosed plans to sell a minority stake of about 10 percent to raise funds for the expansion and list it on the Nigerian Exchange in the near future.

When fully operational at 1.4 million bpd, the refinery is expected to meet Nigeria’s domestic fuel demand and supply other African countries, solidifying its role as a cornerstone of the continent’s energy independence.
