PDP Regroups in Enugu, Vows to Reclaim Power in 2027 Despite Defections
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has declared its readiness to bounce back stronger and win all elective positions in the 2027 general elections, despite the recent wave of defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party made this known on Tuesday during a media briefing at its state secretariat in Enugu, where the Acting State Chairman, Mr. Steve Oruruo, reaffirmed that the PDP remains a formidable political force in the state.
Oruruo, while reacting to the recent defection of Governor Peter Mbah, members of the State Executive Council, and several political functionaries to the APC, said the party is unshaken and has begun a process of rebuilding and reawakening its structures across the state.
“The PDP in Enugu is still very much alive. We are more resolute than ever to galvanize our members and rebuild the party in the face of the governor’s defection,” Oruruo said.
He explained that the party has already commenced grassroots mobilization and strategic engagements aimed at strengthening unity among members and rekindling the spirit of loyalty to the PDP’s ideals.
According to him, while defections are normal in politics, the PDP in Enugu continues to enjoy massive support from its teeming members, adding that several prominent political figures have also signaled their intention to return to the fold.
“Those who have left do not signify the end of the PDP. We have faced similar situations in the past and emerged stronger. What matters is our unity, determination, and connection with the people,” Oruruo emphasized.
He assured party faithful that the PDP leadership is working tirelessly to restore confidence among members and reposition the party for victory in the forthcoming elections.
Political analysts note that Enugu, which has been a PDP stronghold since 1999, is entering a new phase of political realignment following Governor Mbah’s defection to the APC. However, the PDP leadership insists that the party’s deep-rooted presence at the grassroots will guarantee its resurgence ahead of 2027.
