Tragedy in Iyana Ejigbo as Speeding Bus Kills Pedestrian, Injures Two

A commercial bus driver and conductor are on the run after a horrific accident in Iyana Ejigbo, Lagos, resulted in the death of a pedestrian and severe injuries to two others.

According to a statement released today by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident involved a speeding commercial LT bus with registration number AAA 927 YJ.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the bus experienced brake failure, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

The out-of-control bus veered off its course and rammed into unsuspecting bystanders.

Apparently fearing being lynched by the mob, the driver and the conductor immediately fled the scene abandoning the victims and the vehicle.

LASTMA operatives responded swiftly to the scene, extracting the deceased pedestrian who was trapped beneath the bus. They also provided immediate assistance to the two individuals who sustained severe injuries.

All three victims were promptly transported to the General Hospital in Isolo for urgent medical attention.

Officers from the Ejigbo Police Division were also present at the scene, providing crucial security reinforcement during the rescue efforts. LASTMA has since transferred the accident vehicle to the police for a thorough investigation.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and extended heartfelt wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured victims. He implored all motorists to adhere to stipulated speed limits and prioritize regular maintenance of their vehicles, particularly the braking systems, to prevent such avoidable tragedies on our roads.

LASTMA reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property on Lagos roads, emphasizing its dedication to swift emergency response and the safety of all road users.

The agency urged the public to report any incidents of traffic violations, vehicle breakdowns, emergencies, or road accidents through their toll-free hotline: 080000527862 (0800-00-LASTMA).

Authorities are currently searching for the absconded driver and conductor as investigations into the fatal accident continue.
