NiMet Forecasts Sunshine, Hazy Conditions, Isolated Thunderstorms Nationwide from Sunday to Tuesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected a mix of sunshine, haziness, and isolated thunderstorms across various parts of the country between Sunday and Tuesday.

In its weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet predicted sunny and hazy conditions over parts of Katsina, Yobe, Kano, and Jigawa States on Sunday morning. Other northern states are also expected to experience clear, sunny weather during the early hours of the day.

According to the agency, isolated thunderstorms may occur later in the afternoon or evening over parts of southern Taraba. For the North Central region, NiMet forecast sunny skies with patches of clouds in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall later in the day in parts of Benue and Kogi States.

The southern region is expected to experience a cloudy atmosphere with chances of morning thunderstorms and light rains in areas such as Ebonyi, Ogun, Ondo, Imo, Abia, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are likely to follow in most southern states as the day progresses.

On Monday, the agency predicted continued sunny conditions over the northern region during the morning hours, with isolated thunderstorms expected later in the day in parts of southern Kaduna and southern Taraba.

In the central region, sunny skies with patches of clouds will dominate the morning, while isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall may occur in parts of Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, and Nasarawa during the afternoon and evening hours.

For the southern states, NiMet anticipated a cloudy start with light morning rains in Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, while later in the day, moderate thunderstorms are expected over parts of Enugu, Ogun, Oyo, Abia, Imo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.

The agency’s forecast for Tuesday indicates that the northern region will remain largely sunny throughout the day.

The central states are expected to experience sunny skies interspersed with patches of clouds.

Over the southern region, NiMet projected a cloudy atmosphere in the morning with light rain in some parts of Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are anticipated later in the day in Ogun, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River, and Lagos.

NiMet advised motorists to exercise caution while driving in rainy conditions and urged farmers to avoid applying fertilizers or pesticides immediately before rainfall to prevent nutrient loss through leaching.

The agency also cautioned residents to secure loose objects and stay away from tall trees during storms to avoid injury from falling branches. Additionally, airline operators were advised to obtain up-to-date, airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to enhance flight safety and planning.
