Presidential Pardon List Under Review for Legal Compliance — Fagbemi

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has disclosed that the long-awaited presidential pardon list is currently undergoing a final review to ensure full legal compliance before it is officially released.
Speaking on Thursday, Fagbemi said the process has reached the “final administrative stage,” where the names and recommendations are being carefully scrutinized to align with legal provisions and due process.
“The presidential pardon list is at the final administrative stage. This stage involves thorough vetting of all names and recommendations to ensure compliance with legal requirements,” the minister stated.
He emphasized that the review process is crucial to maintain transparency and uphold the integrity of the justice system, adding that the government is determined to avoid errors or controversies that may arise from improper inclusion.
The presidential pardon process, usually handled by the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy, is designed to grant clemency or reduce sentences for certain inmates based on humanitarian grounds, old age, ill health, or good conduct.
Fagbemi noted that once the review is completed, the list will be submitted for final approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, after which official communication will be made public.
He assured Nigerians that the process is being handled with fairness, diligence, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
