Orji Kalu Speaks on Nnamdi Kanu’s Case, Urges Respect for the Judiciary

Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has expressed confidence that the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, would have a positive impact on security in the South-East region.

Speaking on the matter, Kalu, however, stressed the need to respect the ongoing judicial process, noting that Kanu’s case is before a competent court.

“Well, let me say this you know, Nnamdi Kanu is before a court of competent jurisdiction, and it would be very unfair for me to be talking about the release of Nnamdi Kanu while the case is still before Justice Omotosho,” the Senator said.

He urged Nigerians to allow the legal process to take its course and avoid making comments that could undermine the judiciary.

“I urge Nigerians to learn how to respect the courts, and I want to leave that about respecting the courts for now,” Kalu added.

Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021, is currently facing trial on charges bordering on treasonable felony. His continued detention has sparked calls from several political and traditional leaders in the South-East for his release as part of efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.

Kalu’s diplomatic caution comes as the judicial proceedings before Justice Omotosho have intensified, notably addressing Kanu’s deteriorating health while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). The Federal High Court recently directed the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to constitute a team of medical experts to examine Kanu and submit a report on his fitness to stand trial, an action that directly stems from Kanu’s application to be transferred to the National Hospital. By deferring to the court, Kalu aligns himself with the position that the rule of law must dictate the process, while simultaneously using his political influence to pursue what he termed “backdoor diplomacy” to achieve a peaceful resolution and ultimately ensure the release of the IPOB leader.
