Senate President Akpabio Vows to Protect National Assembly’s Integrity

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has asserted that the National Assembly will not allow any member to undermine its integrity or hold its proceedings hostage.
Speaking on Friday during plenary, Akpabio emphasized that the legislature stands as a pillar of Nigeria’s democracy and must be respected by all lawmakers. He warned that any attempts to compromise the dignity of the National Assembly would be met with strict enforcement of parliamentary rules.
“The National Assembly cannot and will not be held hostage by the disruptive actions of any member. Every lawmaker must uphold ethical standards and respect institutional rules,” Akpabio stated.
The Senate President’s remarks come amid concerns over internal disagreements and allegations of misconduct by some members, which have occasionally threatened the smooth functioning of legislative activities. Akpabio stressed that the institution’s integrity must always take precedence over individual interests.
He further clarified that enforcing discipline is not meant to stifle dissent, but to ensure orderly proceedings and preserve the credibility of Nigeria’s legislative body.
