Professor Yakubu Proceeds on Terminal Leave, May Agbamuche Takes over at INEC

A significant leadership change has occurred at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with May Agbamuche-Mbu being named the Acting National Chairman following the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
Professor Yakubu, whose tenure as head of the electoral body was scheduled to conclude in November 2025, formally relinquished his duties on Tuesday, handing over the reins to Agbamuche-Mbu.
The transition took place at the INEC headquarters in Abuja during a meeting that included Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from across the country.
A seasoned member of the Commission, Agbamuche-Mbu is the most senior National Commissioner and currently presides over INEC’s Legal Services, Clearance & Complaints Committee (LSCCC).
Her assumption of the top role marks a pivotal, albeit temporary, change in command until a permanent successor is confirmed.
Addressing the gathered officials, the departing Chairman implored his colleagues—including commissioners and directors—to extend their complete cooperation to Agbamuche-Mbu as she steers the organization through this interim period.
Professor Yakubu clarified that his exit is in compliance with the constitutional term limit. He had previously completed his initial five-year mandate in November 2020 before being reappointed by the President and subsequently affirmed by the Senate for a final, second term.
In an impassioned valedictory speech, Professor Yakubu conveyed his deep appreciation to all members of the INEC staff and the Resident Electoral Commissioners. He lauded their unwavering commitment, diligence, and tireless efforts throughout the years he presided over the institution.
Agbamuche-Mbu is now tasked with leading the commission and ensuring the continuity of its operations until the appointment of a substantive Chairman is finalized.
In his final remarks, Professor Yakubu underscored the importance of institutional continuity and the need for the commission to maintain its independence and commitment to free and fair elections, even during this period of transition. He noted that the smooth handover of leadership to Agbamuche-Mbu is a testament to the resilience and strong foundation of INEC’s internal processes. Furthermore, he expressed confidence in the current leadership structure to manage the upcoming electoral cycle preparations and navigate any immediate challenges, stressing that the commission’s work is critical to Nigeria’s democratic stability and must not falter.
