Tinubu: Hosting 2030 Commonwealth Games a ‘Dream’ for Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s determination to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, describing the bid as a “dream” that must become reality.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Wednesday, Tinubu highlighted that no African country has ever hosted the Games since their inception in 1930.

He said securing the 2030 edition for Nigeria would send a strong message that Africa is central to the future of the Commonwealth.

“It’s time for Africa,” Tinubu declared, urging the Commonwealth to “complete the circle of unity” by awarding the hosting rights to Nigeria.

Nigeria is expected to present its final bid to the Commonwealth Games Federation’s evaluation committee on Wednesday. The country’s delegation is led by Shehu Dikko, President of the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), with the Commission’s Director-General, Bukola Olopade, also in attendance.

The 2030 Games, which will mark the centenary edition of the multi-sport event, are anticipated to attract significant global attention. Nigeria’s pitch is being positioned not only as a sporting milestone but also as an opportunity to showcase Africa’s readiness to host world-class events.

If successful, Nigeria would become the first African nation to stage the Games.
