2027 Polls: Who Steps in as INEC Chairman as Yakubu Bows Out?

2027 Polls: Who Steps in as INEC Chairman as Yakubu Bows Out?

Nigeria’s political landscape is bracing for a major transition at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as its Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, prepares to leave office in November after serving the maximum two terms.

His exit, after a record 10 years at the helm, will open a crucial chapter in the nation’s democratic journey ahead of the 2027 general elections.

By constitutional provision, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will appoint Yakubu’s successor.

Section 154 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) empowers the President to nominate the INEC chairman, subject to consultation with the Council of State. The choice is expected to attract intense scrutiny, given the controversies and credibility questions that have dogged Nigeria’s electoral process since the return to democracy in 1999.

Observers note that Yakubu’s tenure was marked by both innovations and criticisms. Under his leadership, INEC introduced the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal, which were widely applauded as steps toward greater transparency.

However, disputes over results transmission and allegations of irregularities during the 2023 elections left a cloud of mistrust among many Nigerians.

Stakeholders argue that the next INEC chairman must be a figure of unimpeachable integrity, with the independence and courage to strengthen the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.

With just over two years until the 2027 polls, the new appointee will face immediate pressure to implement reforms, rebuild public trust, and ensure that elections are free, fair, and reflective of the people’s will.

Civil society groups and political actors have already called on President Tinubu to prioritize competence, impartiality, and a proven track record of integrity in making the appointment.

As the countdown begins, all eyes will be on Aso Rock to see who emerges as Yakubu’s successor—and whether the choice will inspire confidence in Nigeria’s democracy or deepen existing doubts.
