Lagos Police Arrest NURTW Chieftain Over Alleged Assault, Murder
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Samsideen Oladiti, popularly known as “Shamelon,” a chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), over allegations of assault and murder.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Command, Babaseyi, the police confirmed that Oladiti was picked up following credible intelligence linking him to violent attacks in parts of the state.
According to the statement, the suspect is being investigated in connection with a fatal assault case that resulted in the death of a victim during a clash involving rival groups.
The police added that preliminary findings revealed Oladiti allegedly coordinated the attack that left several others injured.
“The suspect is currently in custody and is assisting investigators with useful information.
The Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, has ordered a discreet investigation to ensure justice is served. No one is above the law, and anyone found culpable in violent crimes will face prosecution,” the statement read in part.
The Command assured residents that it remains committed to tackling violent crimes, particularly those linked to transport union disputes and cult-related activities.
Oladiti’s arrest comes amid renewed concerns over the resurgence of violence among factions of the NURTW in Lagos, despite efforts by the state government to reform and regulate the union’s activities.
