Hamzat Backs Federal Curriculum Reform, Donates ICT Centre to Alma Mater

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has declared that the state possesses the infrastructure needed to implement the federal government’s newly revised school curriculum.

Hamzat made the remark on Friday while unveiling a solar-powered Information Communication Technology (ICT) Centre at his alma mater, Odo Abore Primary School in Mushin.

The ceremony, which coincided with his 61st birthday, drew attention to both the state’s readiness for curriculum reform and his personal commitment to education.

The deputy governor assured stakeholders that Lagos would not lag in the new rollout.

“We are the first state that made ICT examinable subjects in this country. It is we who said we must examine our children in ICT. So we have always been leading.

“It is not a question of how prepared we are, we are already prepared. It’s just for us to galvanise other parts of the country so that we can speed up the process. So we are always ready,” he said.

Explaining his motivation for the ICT centre donation, Hamzat emphasized the need for Nigerian children to acquire digital skills from an early stage.

“The idea is that every child today must be computer literate. So bringing it to their school makes it easier for them to be able to achieve that.

“So that’s the goal really. It is to allow our children to have access to ICT knowledge, and it is easier and faster when it is in their school.

“We have a team that will manage it. We pay them, they will come here, they will manage it and if anything spoils, we will replace it,” he said.

Hamzat also called on well-meaning Nigerians to invest in initiatives that address educational gaps.

Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Shitu Akeem, hailed the project as a tool for modern learning.

“I feel so happy that this is coming at this time because part of the THEME + agenda is education and technology, and you can imagine having this kind of technology to be able to use for our pupils.

“We are moving away from the old ways of doing things, and we want to move with the times and with an ICT centre like this, which has the facility to enhance quality basic education.

“Today, we are proud that our students can compete with any student across the world with this facility,” Akeem said.

Similarly, Chairman of Odiolowo Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area, Seyi Jakande, thanked Hamzat and urged him to extend similar projects to other schools in the community.

The federal government had earlier explained that the revised basic education curriculum, scheduled for rollout in the 2025/2026 academic session, would produce patriotic and socially responsible citizens while equipping learners with modern, future-ready skills.

The Ministry of Education confirmed that the reform seeks to reduce content overload and align classroom instruction with 21st-century realities.
