New Fleet of CNG, Cargo Trucks to Create Over 24,000 Jobs, Says Dangote

The President of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, has assured that the company’s recent investment in trucks and tankers will generate thousands of jobs, boost innovation, and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy.

Speaking with journalists, Dangote dismissed claims that the company’s expansion into the trucking and logistics space would lead to job losses. According to him, the acquisition of 10,000 trucks, including 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) tankers and 6,000 dry cargo trucks, is designed to modernise operations and create opportunities across various sectors of the economy.

“Every truck we deploy is a source of employment,” Dangote said.

“From the driver to the workshop manager, the mechanics, electricians, tyre specialists, logistics officers and back-office staff each truck provides work for about six people. This means that the 4,000 trucks people are talking about will create at least 24,000 new jobs.”

He explained that the CNG trucks would help Nigeria cut down its dependence on diesel, noting that even Dangote Cement previously imported up to 40,000 tonnes of diesel every month. With the introduction of gas-powered vehicles, the company expects a reduction in diesel imports, aligning with government’s push for cleaner and more sustainable energy use.

Dangote emphasised that the trucks are not aimed at displacing other market players. “We’re not trying to take anybody out of business. These trucks will handle only about 60% of our cargo needs. We still work with independent operators, and the supply chain remains open,” he said.

So far, about 4,000 trucks have already been launched, with more arriving daily. The company expects the remaining shipments to be delivered between October and November, bringing the total fleet to 10,250 trucks by year-end.

He stressed that beyond transportation, the investment will have ripple effects in related industries, particularly in vehicle maintenance, spare parts, tyre production, and logistics management.

“Dangote Industries will continue to innovate, create jobs, and support the Nigerian economy. This investment is proof that we are committed to driving progress while modernising our operations,” he added.
