NEMA Assesses Damage in Sokoto After Devastating Windstorm
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto Operations Office, has carried out an on-the-spot assessment of households and properties affected by a recent heavy downpour and windstorm that struck Akija community in Sokoto South Local Government Area.
The assessment, which took place on Sunday, was led by NEMA’s Planning Officer, Tukur Abubakar. The team focused on determining the scale of destruction caused by the storm, which left dozens of homes either damaged or completely destroyed.
Speaking during the exercise, Abubakar assured residents that the findings would guide relief interventions and government support for victims of the disaster. He noted that the agency remains committed to responding swiftly to emergencies and mitigating the impact of natural disasters on communities.
Residents of Akija, many of whom have been rendered homeless, expressed relief at the agency’s visit. They said NEMA’s prompt response rekindled their hope of receiving assistance to rebuild their lives after the devastation.
One of the community leaders, who spoke to reporters, appealed for urgent aid, particularly shelter and food supplies, to cushion the hardship faced by affected families.
The recent storm adds to a growing list of weather-related disasters in Sokoto. On June 22, reported that windstorms ravaged Gwadabawa and Kware Local Government Areas, killing five people, injuring several others, and destroying homes, schools, and farmlands.
NEMA has yet to disclose the full extent of losses in Akija, but officials said relief efforts will commence once the assessment report is finalized and forwarded to the agency’s headquarters.
