Tinubu Hails Catholic Church, Urges Clerics to Foster Peace, Unity
President Bola Tinubu has commended the Catholic Church and other religious institutions in Nigeria for their longstanding contributions to national development, while urging clerics to intensify efforts in promoting peace, harmony, and reconciliation across the country.
The President made the call on Sunday during the opening session of the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), held in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
He was represented at the event by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
In a statement released by the SGF’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Tinubu described faith-based organisations as “a vital bridge for peace, unity, and moral renewal in the country.”
He lauded the Catholic Church for its pivotal role in nation-building through investments in education, healthcare, and social services, particularly in underserved communities.
“The Catholic Church has been a credible partner in the journey towards national renewal. Your investments in education, health, and social welfare often in remote and underserved communities—speak louder than words.
You have stood with the people in times of hardship, provided comfort in times of grief, and raised your voice against injustice and corruption,” Tinubu said.
The President also called on religious leaders to remain steadfast in denouncing extremism, hatred, and divisive tendencies, stressing that Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than conflict.
Reassuring the gathering of his administration’s commitment to addressing insecurity and social unrest, Tinubu noted that efforts were being made to tackle the root causes of violence by combating poverty, unemployment, and inequality.
He emphasized that clerics have a unique responsibility to shape public values, bridge divisions, and encourage dialogue that promotes national cohesion.
The Catholic Bishops Conference, which brings together prelates from across the country, is expected to deliberate on issues of faith, governance, and national unity during its plenary session.
