NSC Pledges Support As Nigerian Squad Departs For Tokyo World Athletics Championships

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has assured Team Nigeria of its unwavering backing as the country’s athletes head to Tokyo, Japan, for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, scheduled from September 13 to 21.
Speaking at the departure ceremony on Thursday, the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, charged the athletes to give their all and bring glory to Nigeria, stressing that the Commission and the Nigerian people are solidly behind them.
“The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, declared from inception that Nigeria must get it right in athletics. This is a moment of pride for our nation, and we trust our athletes to compete with determination and secure podium finishes,” Olopade said.
He added that the NSC has put in place measures to ensure the athletes enjoy a smooth championship experience and focus solely on delivering their best performances.
Olopade also disclosed that he would personally be in Tokyo to provide frontline support for the contingent, alongside other officials of the Commission.
In a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Kola Daniel, the NSC boss reaffirmed that the Commission would continue to prioritize athletes’ welfare and provide the resources necessary for them to excel.
“Nigerians at home and abroad are looking forward to seeing Team Nigeria shine in Tokyo. Our athletes have worked hard in training, and this is their opportunity to show the world what they are capable of. We believe in them and will stand with them every step of the way,” he said.
Team Nigeria is expected to compete in various track and field events, with high hopes of securing medals and improving the country’s standing on the global athletics stage.
