Cross River PDP Backs Ikem’s Leadership, Rallies for 2027 Comeback

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of its state chairman, Barr. Venatius Ikem, declaring him best positioned to steer the party toward victory in the 2027 general elections.

The decision was taken on Tuesday in Calabar at a meeting of party leaders and stakeholders, where participants pledged to close ranks, strengthen grassroots structures, and maintain internal cohesion as they prepare to challenge Governor Bassey Otu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Chairman of the Forum of Chapter Chairmen, Odidi Emmanuel, said the collective choice of continuity under Ikem was aimed at sustaining stability within the party.

“We have interacted with our state chairman, Barr. Venatius Ikem, and after thorough consultations, we resolved that he should continue. We don’t need rancour in our party; we need transparency and integrity. All chapter chairmen across the 18 local governments have unanimously agreed to adopt Barr. Ikem and his excos for continuity,” Emmanuel stated.

Forum Secretary, Obia Ikika, echoed the sentiment, stressing that the leadership decision was crucial to the PDP’s unity and renewed strength ahead of 2027.

“We have been enjoying a wonderful working relationship with the state chairman. To maintain that, we have strategically resolved to retain him and his team for continuity. We are solidly behind the chairman and every decision taken so far by the party,” Ikika said.

He further dismissed suggestions of division within the party, assuring that the PDP remains united and focused on reclaiming power.

“There is no problem anywhere in the party. The PDP is waxing stronger and will bounce back to reclaim its mandate come 2027,” Ikika added.

Ikem had earlier dismissed speculations that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, could influence the party’s September 27 congress, insisting that Cross River’s party structures and due process would determine its leadership.

The party’s renewed emphasis on solidarity and leadership continuity marks a strategic step as it positions itself to mount a strong challenge in the next electoral cycle.
