Ex-Ondo Governorship Candidate Bamidele Akingboye Dies at 60

Nigeria’s political and business community has been thrown into mourning following the death of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, a former governorship candidate in Ondo State. He died at the age of 60 in his Lagos residence located at Victoria Garden City.

Akingboye, popularly known as OBA, contested the 2024 Ondo State governorship election under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Before venturing into politics, he built a successful career as a businessman and philanthropist. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Benshore Maritime Services and Clog Oil Systems, as well as the President of WeAfrica Group.

His contributions to commerce and industry earned him recognition beyond Nigeria’s borders.

In addition to his corporate accomplishments, Akingboye held the traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland, a position that underscored his cultural ties and influence within his community.

The cause of his death has not been disclosed, and his family has appealed for privacy as they mourn. They added that burial arrangements would be announced at a later date.

Meanwhile, tributes have begun to pour in from political associates, business colleagues, and members of his community, who described him as a visionary leader and a generous figure committed to human and community development.

Contrary to unverified reports circulating online, there is no evidence from credible sources linking Akingboye’s death to domestic violence or foul play. Established media outlets, including Vanguard, Channels Television, and Daily Post, have reported only that he died peacefully at home, with no further details released.

As Ondo State and the larger Nigerian political space come to terms with his passing, many remember him not just as a politician but as a businessman who sought to create opportunities for others.
