Mandela’s Grandson Joins Activists in Bid to Break Gaza Blockade

A grandson of Nelson Mandela, the iconic anti-apartheid leader, is set to join a flotilla of activists aiming to breach Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza.

Mandla Mandela, a South African politician and activist, announced his participation in the Global Sumud Flotilla, which will set sail from Tunisia on Sunday.

The flotilla, comprising dozens of boats and hundreds of activists from 44 countries, seeks to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Mandela emphasized the African perspective on this struggle, stating that Africans understand the plight of living under occupation and oppression.

He drew parallels between the Palestinian situation and South Africa’s apartheid era, asserting that Palestinians face a worse form of oppression.

The mission has garnered support from the African National Congress, South Africa’s ruling party, which likened the effort to the country’s own liberation struggle.

The activists’ endeavor comes amid reports of widespread starvation in Gaza, with the World Food Programme warning that a quarter of the population faces famine.
