One Dead, Five Injured as Car Rams into Crowd in Northern France

A tragic scene unfolded in the early hours of Saturday in Évreux, Normandy, where a car ploughed into a crowd outside a wine bar, leaving one person dead and five others injured, two of them critically.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. local time after what authorities described as a heated altercation inside the establishment. Witnesses reported that a quarrel broke out between a young woman and several men.

Bar staff intervened and escorted patrons outside in an attempt to defuse the situation. Shortly afterward, one of the men involved reportedly retrieved a vehicle and deliberately reversed it at high speed into the group gathered outside.

Public prosecutor, Rémi Coutin described the toll as “very heavy” and confirmed that the case is being investigated as homicide and attempted homicide. He stressed that there is no indication of terrorism or racial motives behind the attack.

Three suspects — two men and a woman — have been taken into custody as part of the investigation. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about their identities or the precise role each played in the events.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, providing critical care to the victims before transporting them to nearby hospitals. Despite their efforts, one individual succumbed to injuries, while doctors continue to fight to save the lives of two others who remain in critical condition.

The city’s mayor, Guy Lefrand, expressed his condolences on social media, praising the swift response of emergency services and assuring residents that calm has since been restored.

The mayor also emphasized the need for the community to come together in support of the victims and their families.

As investigations continue, the horrific event has cast a somber mood over Évreux, raising concerns once again about public safety in nightlife venues and the escalation of violence in social spaces.
