PDP Governors to Meet in Zamfara Prior to Party’s National Convention

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will converge on Gusau on Saturday, August 23, 2025, for a strategic meeting hosted by Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, as part of ongoing efforts to shape the party’s direction ahead of its national convention.
A statement issued on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala, confirmed that the PDP governors are expected to arrive in Gusau Friday evening for a series of engagements, beginning with a welcome dinner to be hosted by Governor Lawal.
According to the statement, Saturday’s closed-door session is a “pivotal gathering to deliberate on key political strategies and foster unity within the party,” as well as to strengthen collaboration on governance and development initiatives across PDP-controlled states.
“Governor Dauda Lawal extends a warm welcome to his counterparts, the governors of the Peoples Democratic Party. The governors are convening today (Friday) for an important session of the PDP Governors Forum. Governor Lawal will host a dinner this evening, ahead of tomorrow’s strategic meeting,” the statement read in part.
The Zamfara meeting is expected to focus on pressing political issues, particularly preparations for the forthcoming PDP national convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, from November 15 to 16, 2025.
The Gusau gathering will be crucial in harmonising positions among governors ahead of the Ibadan convention, where key decisions affecting the future of the opposition party will be taken.
The PDP Governors Forum has in recent years served as a rallying point for the party’s leadership, often playing a central role in mediating internal disputes and setting policy directions.
With the 2027 general elections gradually drawing closer, the Zamfara meeting is expected to send strong signals about the party’s readiness to reposition itself as a formidable opposition force.
