FG Approves Award of Degrees, NCE by Colleges of Education to Strengthen Teacher Education

The Federal Government of Nigeria has granted Colleges of Education the authority to offer degree programs, marking a significant milestone in the country’s educational development.

This dual mandate empowers these institutions to award both Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degrees, expanding access to quality teacher education.

The Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, described the initiative as “a historic milestone in Nigeria’s educational development,” citing the Federal Colleges of Education (Establishment) Act No. 43 of 2023.

This development allows Colleges of Education to operate with full legislative and operational authority, preserving their core mission of producing highly skilled and professional teachers.

The policy is expected to produce graduates with both NCE and B.Ed qualifications, ensure a steady supply of qualified teachers, and retain skilled educators within the system.

Chairman of the House Committee on Federal Colleges of Education, Hon. Adamu Tanko, assured stakeholders that degrees awarded by Colleges of Education would hold the same value as those from conventional universities.
