By-Election: IGP Deploys AIG, CP for Zamfara Supplementary Poll

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has commissioned an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Gummel, alongside the Commissioner of Police for Kaduna State, CP Rabiu Muhammad, to oversee the supplementary election for the Kaura-Namoda South State Constituency in Zamfara State.

AIG Gummel, while addressing police officers and other security agencies, admonished against interference in the proceedings scheduled for August 21.

He further cautioned political agitators and troublemakers against any attempts to disrupt the process.

AIG Gummel assured that security forces are prepared to ensure a safe and secure environment in the five polling units where the election will occur.

In his remarks, CP Rabiu Muhammad instructed police personnel assigned to election duties to remain at their designated security posts and refrain from direct involvement in the electoral process.

He emphasized that their role is solely to safeguard the environment, not to meddle in electoral activities.

Additionally, the police authorities have declared a prohibition on the participation of state-owned security outfits in the supplementary election.

The election will be conducted in five polling units across two registration areas: Sakajiki and Kyambarawa wards of the Kaura-Namoda South Constituency.

This supplementary election is necessitated by the previous declaration of the Kaura-Namoda South Constituency by-election as inconclusive by the Returning Officer, Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University, Gusau.

Gusau elucidated that the margin between the leading party and the runner-up was smaller than the total number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected in polling units where elections were annulled, thereby necessitating a supplementary poll.

State Resident Electoral Commissioner Mahmuda Isah, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau preceding the exercise, assured political parties and voters that the commission has implemented sufficient measures to ensure a seamless and untroubled process.
