Traxport Partners Belgian Firm to Boost Freight Rail in Nigeria

Nigerian rail company, Traxport Rail Services Limited, has sealed a strategic partnership with Belgium’s DeWiz Engineering Services Ltd, a subsidiary of CET Group, to improve freight rail operations in the country.

The deal is designed to inject both technical expertise and capital into Nigeria’s struggling logistics sector, with a focus on cleaner and more efficient rail transport.

Under the agreement, CET Group has acquired equity in Traxport, giving the Belgian firm a stake in the ambitious plan to roll out liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered freight rail services along the Lagos–Kano corridor.

The corridor, stretching over 1,500 kilometres of refurbished narrow-gauge railway, remains one of Nigeria’s most critical trade routes, linking the nation’s industrial hub in the South to agricultural and mineral-producing regions in the North.

Traxport says the project will reduce dependence on diesel-powered trucks, ease road congestion, cut carbon emissions, and create a scalable alternative for moving petroleum products, cement, agricultural produce, and containerized goods nationwide.

“This partnership represents more than capital investment. It is a commitment to redefine freight logistics in Nigeria through sustainable transport solutions,” the company stated.

DeWiz and its parent CET Group bring decades of experience in energy and engineering projects, including investments in LNG plants and construction works across West Africa.

The collaboration is expected to position Traxport as a leader in Nigeria’s private-sector driven rail freight services.

Analysts say the move comes at a critical moment, as Nigeria seeks to modernize its infrastructure and attract foreign investment to drive growth. If successful, the LNG-powered Lagos–Kano freight service could mark a turning point in the nation’s transport sector, offering a cleaner and more reliable model for moving goods across the country.
