21 Potiskum Communities Hit by Yobe Floods

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that last Friday’s heavy downpour displaced hundreds of residents across 21 communities in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State.

NEMA, in a joint update with the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and humanitarian partners on Sunday, said assessment and relief efforts are ongoing in the affected areas.

According to the agency, floodwaters have begun to recede, allowing some residents to return home and recover their belongings. However, the scale of displacement remains high, with 612 people from 102 households currently sheltering at Sabon Gari Primary School in Potiskum.

The affected communities include Old Prison, Unguwar Makafi, Tsangaya, Bayan Garejin Dan Juma, Makarahuta, Tandari, Afghanistan, Karofi, and several others.

NEMA explained that food, shelter materials, mosquito nets, blankets, and medical aid have already been distributed to the displaced, while plans are underway to reintegrate them into host communities.

The agency commended the Yobe government for swift relief measures but noted that further humanitarian support is still needed.

It assured residents that efforts are in place to ensure the safe return of displaced persons once conditions improve.
