EFCC Cracks Down on Illegal Mining Operation in Akwa Ibom

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended five individuals suspected of involvement in an illegal mining operation. The suspects, who were transporting 1,200 bags of ilmenite, a valuable mineral used in the production of titanium dioxide, were arrested in Akwa Ibom State.
The EFCC’s Uyo Zonal Directorate had been conducting surveillance along the coastal lines of Mkpanak in Ibeno Local Government Area for weeks before making the arrest. The suspects, who claimed to be working for WillJane Global Ventures Limited, were allegedly operating without a mining license and transporting the mineral to unknown destinations.
Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the suspects, Willie Peter Uboko, is the owner of the company in question. He admitted to operating without a license for four years and transporting ilmenite to various locations.
The suspects are currently undergoing investigations and would be Prosecuted once investigations are concluded.
The EFCC’s action is part of a broader effort to combat illegal mining activities in Nigeria. The agency is committed to ensuring that mineral resources are exploited in a manner that is consistent with the law and benefits the country.
The arrest of these suspects serves as a warning to others who engage in similar activities.
