ADC Pledges to Practicalise Youth Leadership in Nigeria

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reiterated its commitment to youth inclusion in the nation’s leadership, promising to actively create opportunities for young Nigerians to shape the country’s political future.

Speaking at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, ADC leaders announced the appointment of several young politicians to strategic positions within the party’s National Working Committee. Hauwa Yusuf was named Deputy National Secretary, Bilyaminu Duhu appointed Assistant National Youth Leader for the North East, Hassana Dada as Assistant National Youth Leader for the North Central, David Itokpa as Deputy National Welfare Secretary, and Jackie Wayas as Deputy National Publicity Secretary.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar commended the move, describing it as a powerful example of translating advocacy into action. “The future of our youth must not be shaped in their absence,” he said, praising the ADC for “walking the talk” on youth inclusion.

In her remarks, Hauwa Yusuf described her appointment as a victory for all young Nigerians rather than a personal achievement. “This appointment is not about me, it’s about the inclusion of the youths,” she said, stressing that merit should be the primary criterion for political appointments.

ADC’s National Youth Leader, Balarabe Rufai, used the occasion to criticise the Federal Government for what he called its half-hearted approach to youth empowerment, pointing to low budgetary allocations for youth-focused programmes and the poor implementation of the student loan scheme. He insisted that the ADC views young people as the backbone of its movement and will continue to push for their active participation in governance ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party maintained that its latest appointments are not symbolic gestures but part of a deliberate strategy to position young leaders at the centre of its decision-making process, with the goal of transforming Nigeria’s leadership landscape in the coming years.
