Lagos State University (LASU) Mandates Staff to Resume Duties on Monday

The administration of Lagos State University, LASU, has instructed employees, who have been on strike for over a week, to return to work on Monday.
This directive comes as the Lagos State government, proprietors of the university, has addressed the staff’s demands.
In an official statement, Mrs. Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi, Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, announced that both academic and non-academic personnel should recommence their duties on Monday.
“The Lagos State University Management, during its Special Virtual Meeting on Friday, August 8, 2025, deliberated on the communiqué concerning the meeting between the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, and the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions, alongside the university management and other pertinent stakeholders, and observed the following: The aforementioned meeting, convened on Thursday, August 7, 2025, by Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, aimed to resolve the issue of the twenty-three (23) months’ salary arrears resulting from the implementation of the 25%/35% salary increment at the university.
“The Deputy Governor highlighted that the Lagos State Government had implemented the 25%/35% salary increase domestically in December 2024, with immediate effect. However, considering the staff unions’ demand for the twenty-three (23) months’ arrears, the government, on compassionate grounds, approved the payment of twelve (12) months out of the twenty-three (23) months’ arrears. It was resolved that twelve (12) months of the arrears would be disbursed;
“The state government would remit nine (9) months’ arrears in three monthly installments, from August to October 2025, while the university management would settle the remaining three months from November 2025 to January 2026.
“The University Management further noted from the Communiqué: The Deputy Governor committed to further discussions with the Governor regarding the unions’ request for a 20% salary increase as pledged by Mr. Governor to all civil servants in Lagos State during his 2023 election campaign;
“The Joint Action Committee of the staff unions committed to convening its Congress on Friday, August 8, 2025, with the intention of suspending the strike effective Monday, August 11, 2025, and all relevant stakeholders present at the meeting duly signed the Communiqué.
“Following comprehensive deliberations, the University Management instructed all university staff to resume duties effective Monday, August 11, 2025, and also encouraged them to conduct their responsibilities peacefully.
“The University Management extends its heartfelt gratitude to all staff members for their patience, understanding, and unwavering cooperation throughout this period,” the statement concluded.
