Governor Eno Inaugurates 100-Bed Renewed Hope Mother and Child Hospital in Akwa Ibom

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, on Wednesday inaugurated a 100-bed Renewed Hope Mother and Child Specialist Hospital in Oko Ita, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, aimed at improving maternal and child health services in the state.
The state-of-the-art facility was constructed under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and is designed to offer comprehensive maternal, neonatal, and paediatric care to residents of the area and adjoining communities.
Governor Eno, who was represented at the commissioning by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, commended President Tinubu for making the project a reality through his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery nationwide.
“Our President understands that health is wealth. The commissioning of this hospital speaks to his commitment to addressing the healthcare needs of the people, especially in rural areas, and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 on good health and well-being,” Eno stated.
He noted that the new hospital would significantly complement the state’s healthcare infrastructure and ongoing efforts to deliver accessible and affordable health services.
The governor also revealed that several model Primary Health Centres have already been established across Akwa Ibom’s ten federal constituencies.
Further highlighting the state’s healthcare agenda, Eno disclosed plans for the upcoming commissioning of a 350-bed Ibom International Multi-Specialist Hospital, aimed at making Akwa Ibom a hub for medical tourism.
Speaking at the event, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, said the hospital is part of a wider initiative to reduce maternal and child mortality through partnerships between the Federal Government and sub-national entities.
“This ultramodern hospital is one of 45 Mother and Child Centres built and fully equipped by my office across Nigeria. Our 2024 SDGs Progress Report reveals sobering statistics, especially in maternal health. This centre marks a significant step in Nigeria’s journey towards achieving SDG Goal 3,” she said.
Orelope-Adefulire thanked President Tinubu for his continued support for the SDG programmes and pledged further collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Government.
She announced plans to provide residential quarters for medical personnel and additional support to upgrade the facility to a full-fledged general hospital.
She also urged increased efforts toward routine antenatal and postnatal care, expanding skilled birth attendance, improving HIV/AIDS prevention for pregnant women, and ensuring complete immunisation for children.
Goodwill messages were delivered by prominent dignitaries, including Senator Ekong Sampson, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals; Senator Ita Enang, former Presidential Aide; and Ime Okon, the Member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency.
The 100-bed hospital comes fully equipped with modern medical infrastructure, including operating theatres, delivery beds, recovery rooms, emergency carts, scanning and laboratory rooms, ultrasound scanners, and both manual and electric resuscitators.
The inauguration marks another milestone in the Tinubu administration’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s healthcare sector, especially in underserved communities, through the Renewed Hope Agenda.
