ADC Slams Tinubu Over ₦712bn Lagos Airport Upgrade, Calls It Misplaced Priority

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised the Bola Tinubu-led administration over its decision to spend ₦712.3 billion on the renovation of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, describing the move as a misplaced priority and an act of fiscal recklessness.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, condemned the approved expenditure as “outrageous,” accusing the government of being out of touch with the economic realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.

According to reports, President Tinubu gave the green light for the massive infrastructure project during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held on Monday. The upgrade is being undertaken under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Management, Festus Keyamo, who announced the approval after the FEC meeting in Abuja on Thursday, said the project would mark the first major rehabilitation of the airport’s aging terminal since it was constructed decades ago.

Reacting to the development, the ADC questioned whether such a large-scale project had been properly scrutinised and approved by the National Assembly, insisting the expenditure lacked transparency and accountability.

“The African Democratic Congress strongly condemns the outrageous ₦712 billion airport renovation project announced by the Tinubu administration as another brazen act of fiscal recklessness and official insensitivity, which further confirms how far this APC government is removed from the reality of the suffering people of Nigeria,” the party said.

The ADC called on the federal government to redirect funds toward more urgent national priorities, including poverty alleviation, education, healthcare, and food security, rather than lavish spending on infrastructure it described as non-essential in the current economic climate.
