Edo Activist Okhai Okhani Alleges Assassination Attempt by Political Actors Over Anti-Corruption Campaigns

A prominent Edo-based activist, Comrade Okhai Okhani, has alleged that a group of politically motivated attackers attempted to assassinate him during a violent assault that occurred at a stakeholder summit in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.
He claims the attack was orchestrated to silence him over his consistent efforts to expose corruption within government structures.
According to Okhani, the assault took place on July 26, 2025, when a large group of over 50 armed men, allegedly vigilantes linked to political interests, stormed a community gathering organized by his group, Edo North Unity Worldwide.
The activist said he was beaten with machetes, sticks, and the butts of rifles, suffering serious injuries to his head, ribs, and limbs.
“They didn’t just want to intimidate me. They came to kill me,” Okhani said. “It was a coordinated attack meant to silence me for speaking the truth and demanding accountability from those in power.”
Eyewitnesses at the event confirmed the incident, describing how the attackers disrupted the meeting, targeted Okhani specifically, and forcibly took him away.
He was later detained at the Auchi Police Area Command, where he alleged he was held without charge and denied immediate medical attention.
Following public outcry and the circulation of video footage showing the bruised activist in distress, the Edo State Police Command confirmed that it had commenced an investigation into the matter.
The police assured the public that all individuals involved would be identified and prosecuted according to the law.
Human rights groups and civic organizations have condemned the attack, calling it a clear attempt to muzzle free speech and civic engagement.
They also raised concerns about the use of vigilante groups as instruments of political enforcement and intimidation, particularly in the lead-up to the 2026 general elections.
“This is a dangerous sign,” one rights advocate stated. “When those who question power are attacked in broad daylight, it shows that democratic freedoms are under direct threat.”
Okhani, who has long been vocal about alleged corruption and abuse of office within local government circles, said he would not be deterred by the violence. He vowed to continue advocating for good governance, transparency, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
He also called on the Inspector General of Police, civil society organizations, and international human rights observers to monitor the investigation and ensure that justice is served.
The incident has sparked broader conversations about political violence in Nigeria and the growing risks faced by activists, whistleblowers, and community leaders who dare to challenge entrenched power structures.
As investigations continue, the public awaits concrete action to hold those responsible accountable and to safeguard the democratic space in Edo and beyond.
