Tinubu Eulogises Super Falcons, Says Team Has Inspired Millions

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the Super Falcons of Nigeria for their heroic performance in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, describing the team as an embodiment of national pride and a source of inspiration to millions of young girls across the country. Speaking during a presidential reception in their honour at the State House, Abuja, on Sunday, Tinubu said the team’s resilience and unity lifted the spirit of the nation and proved that Nigerian women can achieve greatness on the global stage. He said their victory was not just about football but a testament to the country’s strength, determination and endless potential. In a humorous moment, the President recounted how the match had unsettled his household, revealing that the First Lady was so engrossed in the game that she nearly abandoned her kitchen duties. He noted that she only watches football when the Super Falcons are playing, highlighting the influence the team has on the country. The President said he initially avoided watching the game due to anxiety but later became filled with pride and excitement as the team staged a dramatic comeback. He described the final whistle as a moment of joy felt all over Nigeria, saying the Falcons had reminded the nation of the power of hope and determination. President Tinubu announced a series of rewards for the team, including national honours, cash gifts, and housing support. He said each player would receive the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger, a cash prize of $100,000, and a three-bedroom apartment under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme. Members of the technical crew were also honoured with cash rewards and recognitions. He said the team’s performance had gone beyond football and served as a powerful example to young girls that their dreams are valid and achievable. He pledged continued support for the growth of women’s football and sports in general, noting that the success of the Super Falcons had united the country and uplifted its image on the world stage. The reception was attended by the First Lady, top government officials, members of the Nigeria Football Federation, and family members of the players. The Super Falcons’ latest victory adds to their record as the most successful team in African women’s football.
