Sanwo-Olu Swears in Newly Elected Chairmen for Lagos’ 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, officially sworn in the newly elected executive chairmen and vice-chairmen of the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), marking a fresh chapter in local governance across the state. The inauguration ceremony took place at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, and was attended by top political stakeholders, traditional rulers, community leaders, and party loyalists.

The swearing-in follows the successful conduct of the July 12 local government elections, in which the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a sweeping victory, winning all 57 chairmanship seats and 375 out of 376 councillorship positions. The election, which was supervised by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), was largely peaceful, although voter turnout was relatively low.

Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu congratulated the new council executives and urged them to justify the trust reposed in them by delivering impactful governance at the grassroots level. He reminded them that the local government remains the closest tier to the people and that their leadership must reflect the needs and aspirations of the communities they serve.

Hon. Sesan Olowa, Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki LGA, spoke on behalf of the newly inaugurated chairmen, expressing gratitude to the governor, his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, and the APC leadership for fostering a peaceful transition and giving them the opportunity to serve. He also pledged that the new council executives would focus on delivering visible development and ensuring inclusive governance.

The chairmen are expected to assume office immediately and begin implementing programs that align with the state’s development agenda. Areas of focus include road rehabilitation, primary education, healthcare, youth empowerment, environmental sanitation, and support for small and medium enterprises.

Sunday’s inauguration also symbolized the continuation of the APC’s dominance in Lagos politics and reaffirmed the party’s grassroots strength ahead of future elections. Governor Sanwo-Olu urged the council officials to remain accountable, responsive, and committed to the ideals of the party and the expectations of the people.

With their tenure now officially commenced, the spotlight turns to the 57 new chairmen and their deputies as they take on the responsibility of driving development and deepening democratic governance at the local level across Lagos State.
