243 Graduate with First-Class as Babcock University Holds 23rd Convocation Ceremony

 

At the 23rd convocation of Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun, held on Sunday, a remarkable 243 students achieved first-class honors among 3,568 graduates, encompassing both undergraduate and postgraduate candidates, including 217 PhD scholars.

 

Fatimah Lawal, from the Department of Economics, distinguished herself as the valedictorian with an impressive CGPA of 4.97 on a 5-point scale.

 

The top postgraduate achievers in the PhD program were Oladele Alabi and Emmanuel Okpechi, both earning a CGPA of 4.91 on a 5-point scale, while Oluwabamise Adeniyi attained the highest distinction in the Master’s degree program with a CGPA of 4.89 out of 5.0.

 

 

 

Fatimah also garnered the President’s Award for outstanding performance in leadership, academics, community, and spiritual services, along with the Senior Vice-President’s Award, the School Deans Award, and the Best Academic Program Award.

 

During the ceremony held at the university’s stadium, Prof. Ademola Tayo, President/Vice-Chancellor, commended the new graduates, their families, and the university community for their unparalleled achievements.

 

He highlighted that the university’s academic programs have received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC), the West African College of Physicians, the International Board of Education (IBE), and the Adventist Accrediting Association (AAA).

 

“In addition, all our courses are now 100 percent NUC accredited, and the agency has approved new programs such as Cybersecurity, Information Systems, Peace Studies, and Conflict Resolution,” he added.

 

Prof. Tayo, who has served nearly a decade as Vice-Chancellor, announced his departure on December 1, 2025, and noted the faculty’s success in securing numerous research grants for transformative projects over the past year, with graduates assuming leadership roles in various fields.

 

He revealed that the institution’s Centre for Open and Distance Learning celebrated its inaugural graduating class during this convocation.

 

Tayo affirmed the university’s commitment to excellence, urging graduates to focus on enduring values and virtues gained from their education as they confront Nigeria’s developmental challenges.

 

“Venture forth, seize the opportunities. You bear responsibilities for Nigeria and the world. Apply your knowledge and skills, engage in community service, remain prayerful, and continuously learn. Wherever you may be, serve as exemplary ambassadors of Babcock University.”

 

Delivering the commencement speech, guest speaker Dr. Kudakwashe Tagwirei from Zimbabwe emphasized the significance of university education, encouraging graduates to contribute substantially to the advancement of Nigeria and Africa.

 

He noted that Nigeria represents Africa’s largest market and urged graduates to innovate and introduce new technologies to benefit the continent.

 

In his address, Prof. Bassey Idoh, Chancellor of the university, congratulated the graduates and lauded the university’s administration for their dedication and commitment to nurturing the new alumni.
