Team Nigeria has delivered a strong showing at the ongoing 2025 Africa Karate Championship in Abuja, claiming five medals and securing second place on the overall medals table as of Friday evening.

The prestigious continental tournament, which began on July 21 and runs through July 28, has drawn more than 1,000 elite karatekas from 31 African nations for a week of high-level competition, showcasing skill, discipline, and athleticism.

Nigeria’s national team clinched one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, earning praise from fans and sports officials alike for their spirited and competitive performances on home soil.

Egypt, widely regarded as a powerhouse in African karate, maintained its dominance by topping the medals chart with an impressive tally of eight gold, one silver, and three bronze medals.

Senegal, Morocco, and Niger shared the third position jointly, each securing one gold, one silver, and one bronze. Algeria followed closely in fourth with a single gold medal, while Cameroon rounded out the top five with three silver and four bronze medals.

The championship, hosted at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, has been hailed as a major boost for the sport in Nigeria, both in terms of participation and public interest. With competition still ongoing and several final bouts scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, there is growing optimism that Team Nigeria could add to its current medal count before the tournament concludes.

Officials from the Nigerian Karate Federation have expressed satisfaction with the athletes’ performance so far, commending their commitment and urging continued support from fans and sponsors.

The Africa Karate Championship is one of the continent’s most anticipated martial arts events, serving as a platform to spotlight emerging talent and promote unity through sport. This year’s edition marks a significant milestone for Nigeria as host, offering not only a competitive edge but also a chance to boost tourism and international visibility through sports diplomacy.
