2027 Election: Tinubu Camp on Strong Political Footing Amid Opposition in Disarray

As political tensions begin to mount ahead of the 2027 general elections, allies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have expressed confidence in his re-election bid, pointing to the overwhelming strength of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the disarray within opposition parties.
Drawing comparisons to the 2015 general elections — the last time a sitting president was defeated — APC supporters noted that despite the party’s limited national spread at the time, it managed to unseat the then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.
Back then, the APC secured 187 seats in the House of Representatives, 42 Senate seats, and 16 governorships, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held 173 House seats, 67 Senate seats, and 19 governorships. Importantly, Muhammadu Buhari’s consistent 12-million-vote bloc in the North and Tinubu’s political grip on the South West played a key role in the APC’s victory.
Fast-forward to the present, President Tinubu enters the 2027 race with a significantly stronger APC base:
72 Senators
220 House of Representatives members
28 state governors
In contrast, the PDP, Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) are said to be in internal disarray, lacking both organizational cohesion and influential leadership.
Observers from Tinubu’s camp argue that if the opposition had a fraction of the high-profile political figures backing the president, they would already be calling for his resignation without waiting for an election.
The absence of such a structure has, according to them, turned the opposition’s strategy rooms into “centres of depression.”
They also mocked prominent opposition figures like former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai and former AGF, Abubakar Malami, who, after being sidelined within the APC, were seen celebrating with critics of the Tinubu administration—acts seen by APC loyalists as political desperation.
With the president’s allies exuding confidence and a consolidated support base, they predict an “easy ride” for Tinubu in 2027, emphasizing the current dominance of the APC across Nigeria’s political landscape.
