Davido Sparks Defection Speculations as Adeleke’s APC Move Gains Momentum

Nigerian music star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has stirred political tension following indications that his uncle and Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, may be preparing to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a recently circulated video snippet, Davido is seen performing lyrics strongly alluding to a political shift. The phrases “new broom go sweep better” and “from umbrella to broom” have been widely interpreted as symbolic of the APC and PDP, respectively, fueling rumours that Governor Adeleke is set to join the ruling party. This development follows a high-profile visit in June, where Governor Adeleke, alongside his elder brother Deji Adeleke and Davido, met with President Bola Tinubu at his Lagos residence. Though no official statement was released after the meeting, the visit was seen as a strategic political move ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election. Despite the growing speculation, Adeleke and his media team have repeatedly denied any plan to defect. His spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, described the rumour as unfounded and politically motivated, reaffirming the governor’s commitment to the PDP. However, tensions within the PDP have intensified, with the party’s Osun caucus expressing solidarity with Adeleke, even suggesting they would support him if he chose to join another party. The uncertainty has left party loyalists on edge, amid fears of a possible collapse of PDP structures in the state. On the APC side, reactions have been mixed. Former APC National Secretary and ex-senator Iyiola Omisore accused Adeleke of acting like a “political orphan,” claiming no formal invitation had been extended to him. Some APC stakeholders have welcomed the idea of Adeleke’s defection, viewing him as a political asset, while others have expressed concern over how it could affect internal party dynamics and future ticket arrangements. Davido’s lyrical contribution has further fueled the conversation, marking a rare instance where entertainment intersects directly with unfolding political developments. Though the singer has largely avoided overt political commentary, his latest public message is being read by many as a calculated endorsement of Adeleke’s next political move. With the 2026 election looming and consultations reportedly ongoing, political observers are closely watching for any formal announcement. For now, the Adeleke camp maintains that the governor remains a PDP member, but signs increasingly suggest a major political shift may be on the horizon.
