Farida Waziri, Ex EFCC Chairman Explains Why She Can’t Forget Buhari

Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Farida Waziri, has paid glowing tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a symbol of discipline, modesty, and integrity whose legacy will remain unforgettable. In a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday, Waziri said Buhari's unwavering commitment to the fight against corruption, both as a military ruler and a democratically elected president, left a lasting impression on her. She described the late president as a man of exceptional character who consistently upheld truth, justice, and transparency throughout his public life. Waziri recalled a personal encounter with Buhari which she said exemplified his strong sense of justice. According to her, Buhari intervened to correct an injustice concerning her premature retirement from the Nigeria Police Force. He ensured her promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), which had previously been denied. "President Buhari stood for discipline, modesty, incorruptibility, and above all, the fight against corruption," she said. "He lived modestly, acted justly, and held himself to a higher standard. Nigeria has lost a statesman whose life was a constant reminder that power can be wielded with humility and honesty." Waziri urged Nigerian leaders to emulate the values Buhari represented, especially in rebuilding public trust in governance and institutions. She said the former president's life was a model for patriotism and sacrifice, and that his example should continue to guide those in leadership positions. Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023, died last week in Daura, Katsina State. His passing has drawn nationwide tributes, with political leaders, civil society groups, and citizens acknowledging his contribution to Nigeria’s democratic and anti-corruption journey.
