Finally,Atiku Again Resigns from PDP

Former Vice President of Nigeria and 2023 presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially announced his resignation from the PDP, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku’s exit, confirmed on Tuesday afternoon, comes amid growing political realignments among opposition figures seeking to form a formidable front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former Vice President along with several high-ranking political figures across the country, has been instrumental in the formation of a new political coalition under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is being rebranded as the nucleus of the opposition for the 2027 contest.
Announcing his resignation, Atiku said his decision was driven by the need for a more united and proactive political alternative to what he described as “the growing misrule and economic hardship” under the current administration.
“I have come to the conclusion that it is time to take a new political path that truly reflects the hopes of the Nigerian people. The PDP, as currently constituted, no longer represents the ideals on which it was founded,” Atiku said in a statement released through his media office.
He added that the new coalition, which includes former governors, lawmakers, civil society leaders, and youth organizations, is committed to “building a modern, inclusive and responsive political platform capable of rescuing Nigeria from its current decline.”
This move is expected to further weaken the PDP, which has struggled with internal divisions and leadership tussles since its loss at the 2023 polls.
Political observers see Atiku’s departure as both a personal political recalibration and a potentially destabilizing blow to Nigeria’s oldest opposition party.
Atiku’s defection marks the fifth time in his career that he has switched political platforms, reinforcing his reputation as a key power broker and a seasoned political strategist with national reach.
