Buhari to Be Buried Tuesday, No Longer Today

The burial of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari has been officially postponed to Tuesday, contrary to earlier reports that it would take place today, Monday.

Buhari, who passed away on Sunday afternoon in a London clinic, was Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later served two terms as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.

A high-level presidential delegation departed Abuja and arrived in London on Monday morning to oversee the repatriation of his remains. It was confirmed that preparations for his final journey to Nigeria were underway as of midday Monday.

Katsina State Deputy Governor, Lawal Jobe, announced the change in burial plans while speaking with reporters on Monday afternoon. Jobe said the decision to shift the burial was informed by logistical arrangements and the need to ensure a dignified national farewell.

“The body of our dear former president will now arrive Nigeria tonight, and burial proceedings will hold tomorrow, Tuesday,” Jobe said.

The Deputy Governor arrived at Buhari’s hometown residence in Daura by 11:27 a.m. on Monday to inspect the burial site and review final arrangements.

The Federal Government is expected to hold a brief state ceremony before the private burial in Daura, in accordance with Islamic rites. Security has been tightened in the area ahead of Tuesday’s proceedings, with crowds gathering in mourning.

Further details regarding the funeral rites and attendance by national and international dignitaries are expected to be released in the coming hours.

Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha, 10 children and he was 82.
