Fashola Shuns LG Election, Absent at Polling Booth

Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, was noticeably absent from his polling unit on Saturday during the Chairmanship and Councillorship elections in Lagos State.

Fashola, who was expected to vote alongside his wife, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, at Polling Unit 002, State Junior Grammar School (Special), Itolo Street, Eric Moore, Surulere, failed to show up throughout the election period, which ran from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that voting at the unit officially commenced at 8:19 a.m. following the timely arrival of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials who quickly set up the voting station.

Despite being the designated voting centre for the high-profile former governor, the polling unit recorded low activity, with only a sparse turnout of voters. Out of 1,355 registered voters, only 213 came out to cast their ballots, representing a participation rate of just under 16%.

Fashola’s absence mirrored a similar situation in the 2021 local government elections, when he also failed to appear at the same polling unit to vote. His continued non-participation in local elections has drawn attention, particularly given his longstanding influence in Lagos politics and his prominent role within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The low turnout, even in a high-profile polling unit, has further fueled concerns over growing voter apathy in grassroots elections, often seen as critical to community development and local governance.

As collation and result announcements begin across the state, analysts say the combination of low participation and high-profile absenteeism may reignite discussions about the need for electoral reforms and renewed voter engagement strategies at the local government level.
